Joshua Palkki

Joshua Palkki is Assistant Professor of Vocal/Choral Music Education at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. At CSULB, he leads the University Choir, teaches courses in music education, interfaces with the College of Education, and mentors graduate students in music education. Joshua received his Ph.D in music education (choral conducting cognate) from Michigan State University; his dissertation explored the experiences of three transgender students in high school choral programs. At MSU, he studied conducting with Dr. Sandra Snow, Dr. Jonathan Reed, and Dr. David Rayl, and received a university-wide award for his work on LGBTQ inclusion in choral music education. Palkki was a finalist in the graduate division of the 2011 ACDA national conducting competition while earning a master’s degree in choral conducting at Northern Arizona University. His K-12 career involved teaching middle and high school choral music in California and Maryland, including two performing arts schools. In addition to his guest conducting and adjudicating engagements, Joshua has presented at many state and national research and practitioner conferences and his writing appears or will appear in Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Journal of Research in Music Education, Research and Issues in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, and Choral Journal.
