Bach Chorale Singers Celebrate 50 Years!

Bach Chorale Singers in Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana originated out of a small group of choir members from two local churches, who in 1964 started gathering on Sunday evenings in their homes to enjoy singing the great four-part chorales of J. S. Bach. Within a few years, one member became the first music director, and their repertoire rapidly expanded to include other baroque and classical compositions. The “Bach Chorale” offered their first public concert in 1967, and the chorus became a gem in the local community, continuing to grow in size and musical scope under a succession of talented artistic directors.

With proximity to the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana and also to thriving arts scenes in Indianapolis and Chicago, the Bach Chorale has benefited from a steady flow of highly talented conductors, soloists, and players throughout its 50-year history. Over the years, concert series have included summer pops concerts and numerous collaborations with other groups, including church and high school choirs, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, and performers from Purdue University and Indiana University.

The addition of children’s choirs in the 1990s added an education component to the organization. Each annual concert series features Prelude, Concert, and Youth Choir concerts, and they sometimes perform with the adult chorale. Choral competitions, summer workshops, and concert tours are regularly programmed for the children and youth.

Under the direction of current Artistic Director Michelle Louer, the Bach Chorale’s 50th Anniversary concert series features repertoire that harkens back to the past, with repeats of some repertoire favorites and traditions like a Messiah Sing-Along. Chorale members are especially enjoying visits from former directors at each concert, during which Dr. Louer invites her predecessors to share the podium.

Although celebrating longevity, visiting with old friends, and reminiscing about the past are all great fun during this very special 50th year, Bach Chorale Singers, Inc. remains committed to a future of providing high quality, educational choral experiences and public performances for singers and audience members of all ages.
