Handling Singer Dismissals the Right Way

Handling Singer Dismissals the Right Way

Kathryn Mueller | General, Governance, Management/Leadership, Operations, Technique/Tool

A community chorus is held together by its singers’ commitment to each other and to the group. But what happens when a volunteer singer becomes disruptive to that community spirit—and won’t comply with repeated requests to change their ways? Does your chorus have a carefully spelled-out dismissal procedure, or do you handle things on a case-by-case basis? Or are you sitting there crossing your fingers and hoping it won’t happen, because there is no precedent in recent memory? Read more

The Heart of Vocal Harmony

Emotional Expression in Group Singing

Mike Rowan | Composing/Commissioning, Conducting, General, Performance, Profile, Sample/Template

Music is an emotional medium, yet we often spend rehearsal time in our choirs focused on notes, rhythms, and precision, rarely addressing the meaning of the music, says arranger and producer Deke Sharon. In the new book The Heart of Vocal Harmony: Emotional Expression in Group Singing, Sharon puts the process of delivering an emotionally compelling performance front and center. Read more

Carrying on a Family Tradition of Carol Writing

Carrying on a Family Tradition of Carol Writing

Kelsey Menehan | Composing/Commissioning, Conducting, Families, General, History, Impact/Value, Participation, Performance, Profile, Repertoire

As a young girl, Abbie Betinis noticed that singing “Caroling, Caroling” during the holidays always brought tears to her grandpa’s eyes. Later she would learn that the famous carol was one of many composed by her great uncle Alfred Burt, who was carrying on a family tradition of carol writing begun by his father, the Rev. Bates Burt. In 2001, Betinis, by then a composer herself, decided to pick up the family carol writing tradition. Read more

This report uses data drawn from the survey responses of more than 600 conductors to examine conductors' career paths, training, responsibilities, salaries, and more. These key findings provide an overview of both important challenges and reasons to feel confident about the health of the profession, as well as developments since Chorus America's first choral conductor survey over a decade ago. Empire City Men's Chorus Spring Concert "Free and Easy: songs of youth and pleasure"

Empire City Men's Chorus Spring Concert "Free and Easy: songs of youth and pleasure"

551 Grand Street, New York, NY 10002

Empire City Men... | General, Performance

As the old saying goes: “You’re only as old as you feel” and, in this respect, many of us are deeply connected despite even huge generation gaps. There is so much we can learn from each other. Sometimes the older ones are disenchanted by what they see happening in the world today. Sometimes, the young of society are revving their cars in eagerness to embark on life’s journey, but feel that long-held traditions are holding their gears in neutral… But being a “person of the world” is always being “free and easy;” and truly any place we hang our hats is home at any time. This music celebrates the blissful blindness and naiveté of youth and the youthful mindset. It asserts a person’s freedom in the here and now and studies the idea of fraternity and frivolity with joyful curiosity. Centered in the performance are brilliant male chorus works by David Conte, Camille Saint-Saens, Ulf Långbacka, ECMC Composer-in-Residence Kyle Randall, and more! Please join us.   Read more

Voices of Light / The Passion of Joan of Arc

Voices of Light / The Passion of Joan of Arc

Saint Paul, Minnesota

dhcfielding | Adults/Seniors, Audiences, Conducting, Families, General, History, Innovation, Performance, Repertoire, Singing

The Oratorio Society of Minnesota is proud to announce a powerful presentation in April. Voices of Light merges Carl Dreyer’s legendary 1928 silent film masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc, widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, with the live performance of a moving and powerful score by award-winning American composer Richard Einhorn.  Voices of Light features the 90-member Oratorio Society Chorus, soloists and orchestra. In reviewing the film, Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert wrote: “You cannot know the history of silent film unless you know the face of Renee Maria Falconetti. In a medium without words, where the filmmakers believed that the camera captured the essence of characters through their faces, to see Falconetti in Carl Dreyer’s ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ is to look into eyes that will never leave you.” Richard Einhorn’s music has attracted huge audiences on its own. The Sony Classical release of Voices of Light featuring the renowned vocal ensemble Anonymous 4, has been an international bestseller since its release in 1994. A projection screen, measuring 18 feet high by 24 feet wide has been designed especially for both performances. The movie will be shown using dual 12K High Definition projectors.   This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
