Handling Singer Dismissals the Right Way

Handling Singer Dismissals the Right Way

Kathryn Mueller | General, Governance, Management/Leadership, Operations, Technique/Tool

A community chorus is held together by its singers’ commitment to each other and to the group. But what happens when a volunteer singer becomes disruptive to that community spirit—and won’t comply with repeated requests to change their ways? Does your chorus have a carefully spelled-out dismissal procedure, or do you handle things on a case-by-case basis? Or are you sitting there crossing your fingers and hoping it won’t happen, because there is no precedent in recent memory? Read more

Emotional Expression in Group Singing

Mike Rowan | Composing/Commissioning, Conducting, General, Performance, Profile, Sample/Template

Carrying on a Family Tradition of Carol Writing

Carrying on a Family Tradition of Carol Writing

Kelsey Menehan | Composing/Commissioning, Conducting, Families, General, History, Impact/Value, Participation, Performance, Profile, Repertoire

As a young girl, Abbie Betinis noticed that singing “Caroling, Caroling” during the holidays always brought tears to her grandpa’s eyes. Later she would learn that the famous carol was one of many composed by her great uncle Alfred Burt, who was carrying on a family tradition of carol writing begun by his father, the Rev. Bates Burt. In 2001, Betinis, by then a composer herself, decided to pick up the family carol writing tradition. Read more

Understanding more about choral conducting as an occupation can help choral conductors plan their careers and choral leaders make better decisions. This report uses data drawn from the survey responses of more than 600 conductors to examine conductors' career paths, training, responsibilities, salaries, and more. These key findings provide an overview of both important challenges and reasons to feel confident about the health of the profession, as well as developments since Chorus America's first choral conductor survey over a decade ago. Fairfield County Chorale Spring Concert of Peace & Hope: Fauré and Vaughan Williams

Fairfield County Chorale Spring Concert of Peace & Hope: Fauré and Vaughan Williams

125 East Ave, Norwalk, CT

jromano | Audiences, Education, Families, General, Performance, Repertoire, Singing

Gabriel Fauré's Requiem and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem close out our 2016-2017 season. These two deeply expressive works welcome spring with a message of hope. Both Fauré and Vaughan Williams saw firsthand the destructive nature of war and believed music was a means to preserve civilization. Vaughan Williams composed Dona Nobis Pacem in 1936, when memories of the loss of a generation of young men were fresh in the minds of the British public amid fears of a new war. In his piece, Vaughan Williams used text from three poems by Walt Whitman, parts of the Catholic mass, a political speech, and sections of the Bible. Read more

Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus - New Singers Welcome!

Hadley, MA

J Harvey | Adults/Seniors, General, Rehearsal

The Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus (http://pvsoc.org/) is seeking new singers of all voice parts to join us in the spring semester. We will be preparing for a season finale performance of Mendelssohn's "Elijah" on Saturday May 20 at the UMass Amherst Fine Arts Center.   Rehearsals begin on Tuesday January 3, 7pm, at Most Holy Redeemer Church in Hadley (120 Russell St, Hadley, MA 01035). We rehearse there every Tuesday evening, 7-9pm.   New singers must sign up for a placement hearing, which consists of a short singing session with director Jonathan Harvey exploring range, tonal memory, ear, and intonation. There is no need to prepare a piece. You can sign up for a time here:   http://doodle.com/poll/sutzhtyxnig5s769   Even if your placement hearing is on January 10, you should still come to the first rehearsal on January 3.
