5 Essential Yoga Poses for Singers

Professional singer Justin Montigne has found that yoga improves "everything about his instrument." As a voice and yoga instructor, he shows others how to integrate the two practices. Here he demonstrates the five yoga poses that he finds most helpful for singers.

#1: Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

Tadasana, or Mountain Pose, is used as a basic singing posture, where the spine is aligned and the chest is lifted.

#2: Dandasana (Staff Pose/Singer's Seated Pose)

Dandasana, or Staff Pose/Singer's Seated Pose, is the basis for all seated postures for singers.

#3: Utkatasana (Awkward/ Fierce Pose)

Utkatasana, or Awkward/Fierce Pose, builds strength in the legs and back, which help singers hit higher notes without straining.

#4: Uttanasana (Forward Fold)

Uttanasana, or Forward Fold, releases tension in the lower back—especially useful during longer rehearsals.

#5: Seated Twist

The Seated Twist helps to release tension, lengthen the spine, and support full breaths.
