The Washington Chorus (TWC) seeks a visionary conductor, leader, and teacher of outstanding talent, musicianship, and organizational vision to serve as its Artistic Director.  TWC will welcome the next Artistic Director in July of 2020, as the Chorus prepares for its 60th anniversary season.


The Washington Chorus is the region’s only two-time Grammy award-winning 150-voice symphonic chorus and one of the nation’s premier volunteer choral ensembles, regularly performing at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.


The mission of The Washington Chorus is to preserve and advance the art of choral singing and share the experience of the transformative power of choral music. TWC does this by performing at the highest artistic level before diverse national and international audiences, and by nurturing the next generation of choral singers.



The Position


Conductor. Leader. Community partner. Collaborator. Teacher.


The Artistic Director provides musical leadership, creative vision, and artistic direction to The Washington Chorus.  Working closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees, the Artistic Director ensures that the Chorus fulfills its mission and achieves its goals for artistic excellence, education, and community engagement. 


The Artistic Director attracts, inspires, and retains high caliber volunteer chorus members; programs, conducts, and helps build audiences for innovative and diverse choral repertoire; builds community and instills joy within the organization and in the greater DC area; and enhances the stature and reputation of TWC.  


The Artistic Director positions TWC at the cutting edge of choral music performance locally, nationally, and internationally, combining an appreciation for the fundamentals of excellent choral music repertoire and performance with an adventurous, 21st-century spirit and point of view


The Artistic Director works with the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director and staff to maintain the financial health of the organization and to expand audience and philanthropic support for TWC.





Candidate Profile / Experience and Qualifications


The ideal candidate will combine a thorough knowledge of choral, instrumental, symphonic, and vocal performance with significant experience conducting and leading volunteer and/or professional singers and instrumentalists in a broad range of repertoire and musical styles. 


The successful candidate will have the proven ability to:

  • plan a dynamic, creative, and exciting season;
  • rehearse and conduct concerts of excellent quality;
  • inspire vocal and instrumental musicians to a consistently excellent level of performance;
  • prepare choruses for performance with orchestra led by other conductors;
  • identify highly gifted vocal soloists;
  • collaborate within the active and diverse DC and choral community;
  • build and sustain an enthusiastic audience.


Experience conducting an orchestra at the professional level is required.


The ideal candidate will be committed to expanding the reach and impact of TWC’s Connections programs.  These include the Side-by-Side high school program; the DC Honor Chorus (in partnership with DC Public Schools); and its new partnership with Arts for the Aging (which offers therapeutic life enrichment interventions for memory-loss patients in and around Washington, DC).  These programs bring people of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs together to share the transformative power of choral singing.


The ideal candidate will be flexible, responsive, emotionally intelligent, receptive to new ideas and will actively seek and reciprocate collaboration and feedback. She/he/they will oversee an artistic team that includes the TWC Assistant Conductor and other artistic staff, including the staff accompanist and singers in TWCs professional core.  She/he/they will work in close partnership with the Executive Director in developing performance opportunities, expanding audiences, and attracting philanthropic support for TWC throughout the National Capital Region.


The Artistic Director will make TWC their primary professional commitment and will maintain a residence in the DC metro area.  In addition to artistic and other duties, the Artistic Director will dedicate significant time to collaborating closely with TWC’s Board and management in areas such as planning, fundraising, and strengthening ties between TWC and the communities supporting it and served by it.  


Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree in Music and/or Conducting is preferred.


Compensation and Benefits: 

Compensation is $115,000 to $130,000 annualized, plus employer-paid health benefits, professional development, and other fringe benefits
