Los Robles Master Chorale, a 100 voice regional choir in southern California, seeks a gifted musician to be its Assistant Conductor. The Assistant Conductor must be a flexible, talented individual who is familiar with versatile choral repertoire and can command the respect of the ensemble. Reporting to the Artistic Director, the Assistant Conductor must have strong conducting technique, excellent rehearsal skills, and experience with traditional and contemporary music. The Assistant Conductor must be available to cover the Artistic Director for all LRMC rehearsals and performances, and be prepared to conduct rehearsals and concerts with little to no advanced notice.


  • Cover the Artistic Director for all LRMC rehearsals and performances with little or not advanced notice
  • Conduct prep rehearsals as requested
  • Attend preparatory rehearsals to collect the Artistic Director’s comments and markings; this canbe fulfilled by singing with the ensemble
  • Listen for balance of ensemble when requested by the Artistic Director
  • The Assistant Conductor may be asked to prepare the ensemble and attend orchestral rehearsals for orchestral partnerships when the Artistic Director is unavailable
  • Work with Production Team on rehearsal or concert production issues
  • The Artistic Director will identify opportunities for the Assistant Conductor to conduct the ensemble on selected works and programs during the season; these are for experience and are not fiscally compensated
  • Attend LRMC concerts, special events and programs as needed
  • As a part-time position, it is approximately three hours a week
  • Other duties and responsibilities as directed



  • Masters of Music in conducting degree is preferred, or the equivalent experience working with choral and instrumental ensembles; Bachelors degree will be considered with sufficient experience in ensemble conducting
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and conducting a chorus at the high school, collegiate or community chorus level
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vocal technique and choral/orchestral repertoire
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take direction from the LRMC Artistic Director, and to work collaboratively with musicians, and both professional and volunteer staff
  • LRMC artistic and administrative leadership expects the Assistant Conductor to prioritize LRMC as needed to fulfill the primary responsibilities

Compensation and Benefits: 
  • Assistant Conductor is compensated when he/she conducts a rehearsal or a performance per the contract; taking rehearsals for the Artistic Director pays $75 an hour ($225 for a 3-hour rehearsal, i.e.)
  • The Assistant Conductor will receive two comp tickets to LRMC performances
  • This is a part-time position, no benefits will be offered
