New Singer Auditions
The Milwaukee Symphony Chorus will hold auditions for new singers for the 2019.20 season on March 23 and April 27, 2019.
The Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, founded in 1976, is known and respected as one of the finest choruses in the country. The 150-member all-volunteer chorus has been praised by reviewers for “technical agility,” “remarkable ensemble cohesion,” and “tremendous clarity.” In addition to performances with the MSO, the chorus has appeared on public television and recorded performances on radio stations throughout the country. The chorus has performed a cappella concerts to sold-out audiences and has made guest appearances with other performing arts groups including Present Music, Milwaukee Ballet, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The chorus has also made appearances at suburban Chicago’s famed Ravinia Festival.
Now is a very exciting time to be part of the MSC. The 2019.20 season will be the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural season with Music Director Ken-David Masur, whose personal understanding of and love for choral singing and the orchestral-choral repertoire is certain to lead to years of satisfying concert experiences for the Chorus. In addition, the MSO will open the 2020.21 season in the new Milwaukee Symphony Center, presently being renovated from the old Warner Grand Theater.
New singers who audition on March 23rd may also be eligible to join the MSC for this season’s final concert series, Carmina Burana, to be performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts from June 21-23, 2019.
Auditions are by appointment only. Singers will be asked to perform a classical or art song vocal solo, a chromatic vocalise, brief sight-singing passages, and an optional prepared passage from Handel’s Messiah.
The Milwaukee Symphony Chorus rehearses Monday evenings from 7:00-9:45 pm, with some Tuesday rehearsals possible, depending on repertoire. Some concert series will be performed by smaller choruses selected from within the full chorus, so not every singer will sing every concert. Performance weeks involve rehearsal or performance most every night of that week. Our season generally runs from September through June. Excellent attendance at rehearsals and some personal practice time in between rehearsals are expected.
The Milwaukee Symphony Chorus is an all-volunteer professional-caliber ensemble.
Chorus members are able to obtain half-price tickets to chorus concerts for their friends and family, and we sometimes receive offers for free or discounted tickets to other Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra performances.
