INTRODUCTION

Founded in 1982, the award-winning Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir (PEBCC) has garnered international acclaim for its innovative program of musical performance and education. Widely recognized as the East Bay’s leader for vocal arts education, PEBCC offers unparalleled music education, performance, and international exchange opportunities to an annual enrollment of around 300 young singers ages 4-18.

In the words of one of our Performing Department singers, “PEBCC is a magical place...The opportunities for growth and for exploration abound.” Our mission is to advance the choral arts through education, performance, and collaboration at the highest artistic level, fostering individual development and international relationships.

 

PEBCC singers progress through a rigorous training program of twelve choral groups, guided by a developmentally-focused Kodály-based curriculum. Our top performing choirs, committed to teamwork, discipline, and collaboration, consistently earn grand prizes, first prizes, and gold medals at prestigious international competitions across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. That commitment to international exchange is also manifested in the triennial Golden Gate International Choral Festival, which was founded by PEBCC in 1991 and remains the only opportunity for children’s and youth choirs to meet and compete on an international field in the United States.

 

PEBCC’s innovative approach is reflected in our decades-long advocacy of contemporary art music. Over the past four decades, PEBCC has commissioned and premiered new works by a wide array of internationally renowned composers, and  has been awarded the prestigious Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in 2009, 2012, and 2014.  PEBCC’s ambitious commissioning program includes a recent interdisciplinary collaboration with modern dance company ODC; a staged four-movement work on the theme of immigration by our Artistic Director, Eric Tuan; and a forthcoming work lifting up the words of climate activist Greta Thunberg. Musical innovation and exploration are at the heart of what we do.

 

THE OPPORTUNITY

Having grown successfully as a founder’s organization for nearly four decades, PEBCC is ready to move to the next stage of organizational life. The new Executive Director will bring a creative, collaborative, and entrepreneurial spirit to guide our strategic planning process, expand our donor base and advance fundraising activities, engage alumni, expand the geographic reach and diversity of our program, and leverage the untapped resources of our community.

We seek a leader with executive level leadership skills who brings strong experience and success in strategic planning, financial management, fundraising, board governance, and can develop, lead and support high performing teams of both employees and board members to achieve the goals of a top notch choral organization. The new Executive Director will work closely with the Artistic Director to develop a greater commitment to diversity and to culturally informed community building, and will work collaboratively with arts organizations, parents, funders, and businesses to advocate for the arts and the work of PEBCC.

 

Working in partnership with our Artistic Director, the new Executive Director will report directly to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will support and promote our exceptional teaching artists, music education, performance, and exchange programs and provide leadership for the development of a refreshed vision, mission, and strategic plan for the organization. The candidate will manage a team of six administrative staff and an annual budget of $1.5M.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND PRIORITIES

The Executive Director will build on our tradition of outstanding, innovative performances and a commitment to creating opportunities to discover and perform new choral music works for diverse audiences. The Executive Director will lead our external relations, program operations, financial management, fundraising and team management, including but not limited to:

 

Fundraising and Development Planning

  • Build a broader movement of donors, including individual and foundation donors, prospects, and alums, guided by a new, multi-year development plan.
  • Explore opportunities to raise the organization's visibility with families, key supporters, and businesses through all forms of media, at concerts, through newsletters, and promotional materials.
  • Advance the recruitment of new families with young children through outreach and special events designed to promote PEBCC, resulting in a choir that reflects the values of inclusion, diversity, acceptance, and pride in our East Bay community.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with staff, choristers and their families, parent volunteers, donors, partner organizations, and the artistic community.

Board Development and Training

  • Grow and support the work and effectiveness of the Board of Directors to ensure it can achieve its revenue and fund development, strategic and community building goals, as well as serve as effective public ambassadors for the organization.
  • Implement Board norms supporting a culture of philanthropy and governance best practices.

Strategic Planning and Refreshed Vision

  • Engage the Board, Artistic Director, all staff and selected members of the community in the development of our Strategic Plan and a vision and mission refresh. Focus the direction of the organization through a consensus process that sets the long term organizational goals, objectives and financial targets for the next 3-5 years.

External Relations/Community Building

  • Raise our profile and visibility through producing high quality programs and artistic achievements that inspire and advance the education, performance, and experience of live choral music performed by children and young adults.
  • Serve as an optimistic connector and communicator to the public about the outstanding work of the organization and an active participant in the open dialogue between arts organizations, funders, and media.

Human Resources and Talent Management

  • Recruit, train, manage, retain, and develop diverse, results-oriented administrative and artistic personnel that are passionate about music and the arts with an emphasis on experience of, and appreciation for children’s programs.
  • Ensure all administrative personnel participate in an annual performance review and set annual goals, have opportunities for professional development, and participate in succession planning as needed.
  • Demonstrated commitment to building teams based on equity and inclusion.

Financial Management

  • Work closely with staff, the Board Treasurer, and Finance Committee to prepare the annual budget and track monthly progress, forecasts and cash flows.
  • Ensure the organization operates within sound financial policies and procedures; reviews and manages reserves and investments; and initiates an audit with an external auditor every two years.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE

 

Our ideal Executive Director brings the following qualifications, competencies, and values:

  • A minimum of 7 years of nonprofit Executive leadership experience with a solid track record of achieving fundraising and financial management goals.
  • Demonstrated engagement with the arts, music, and/or children’s programs that develop artistic talents and build spirited, self-assured and resilient people.
  • Demonstrated collaborative leadership style.
  • Ability to listen with empathy, build consensus, and think strategically.
  • Depth of understanding of fundraising principles and methods with demonstrated ability to meet with individual and corporate or foundation donors and successfully gain substantial gifts. Knowledge and understanding of diverse funding streams including earned income strategies, program pricing, and refund policies.
  • Experience recruiting, developing, coaching, and retaining a results-oriented, mission-driven, and dedicated team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to represent PEBCC with conviction, authenticity, and heart to a variety of stakeholder audiences.
  • Knowledge of music education programs and the arts philanthropic landscape in the Bay Area and beyond a plus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of program development and delivery, external relations, and board and program recruitment.
  • Excellent computer skills and deep understanding of the uses of technology for communication with the team and the extended community, tracking of program progress and development projects and results. Advocate for adoption of new and useful technologies.
  • Ability to attend occasional evening meetings, weekend concerts, and conferences, with the option of having flexible hours during the week.

We offer generous benefits, including employer-subsidized cafeteria-style health insurance, four weeks of paid vacation, ten paid holidays, and the opportunity to contribute to a retirement plan. The salary range for this full-time, exempt position is $90K-$110K (DOE).
