Berks Youth Chorus seeks a music director who will promote leadership and serve as an ambassador of the organization within the community all while guiding young singers through musical, choral and vocal exploration. The director will select, rehearse, and perform diverse choral repertoire, and alongside the Executive Director, will discover diverse venues, develop partnerships, and enhance performance opportunities for the choir. The music director plays an integral role in recruitment, retention, and engagement activities, and will create innovative performances that attract and inspire new singers and audiences alike

The mission of Berks Youth Chorus is to enrich our community by fostering and promoting choral excellence in young people through quality performances and music programming. Since the chorus was founded in 1992, the organization has been dedicated to making life-changing musical opportunities accessible to all children.

Job Description:

During Covid-19 Restrictions

  • Work with the Executive Director (ED) to launch our virtual choral program
  • Work with the ED to continue to market and recruit for both our virtual choral programming  and Post Covid-19 programming
  • Select choral pieces that are appropriate for the current makeup of both the ensembles with children and youth in grades 5-8 and grades 9-12 and for virtual performance
  • Lead virtual rehearsals
  • Be or become familiar with recording processes and techniques, and guide singers through the process of presenting, recording, and submitting audio video recordings
  • Provide virtual individual or small group attention to singers who need or desire further guidance in: performing on camera, navigating technical aspects of recording a virtual performance, learning music, or singing technique

Post Covid-19

  • Recruit, audition, and train singers to reach their highest artistic level
  • Conduct weekly rehearsals for two ensembles: grades 5-8 and 9-12 
  • Conduct three main concert performances annually (Fall, Winter, Spring)
  • Conduct public and community performances as scheduled  
  • Work closely with the Board and ED to create and direct the artistic vision of the organization
  • Design creative and thematic programming, and select repertoire to serve or further the artistic vision of the organization 
  • Attend occasional rehearsals of All Stars program and our summer programs to meet and build connections with singers in this segment of our organization 
  • Advise and collaborate with chorus accompanist 
  • Work with the ED to discover and expand current performance opportunities and venues 
  • Embrace technology to engage with and inspire singers and audiences
  • Be an ambassador for the chorus at all times


  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music with an emphasis in choral conducting or equivalent choral conducting experience 
  • Knowledge of vocal pedagogy, especially pertaining to young voices
  • A passion for choral conducting and music diversity 
  • A passion for developing young singers in musicianship and leadership
  • Ability to engage and inspire young singers of varied skill levels
  • Creative and open-minded
  • Tech savvy and innovative
  • Shows excitement for cultivating a growing choral program
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills
  • Upon offer, undergo a comprehensive criminal background check

Desired but not required

  • A proficiency in keyboard to accompany the chorus in the occasional absence of the accompanist
  • Knowledge of sound/recording equipment needed to mic or record ensembles 

FTE: This position is part-time with responsibilities that will average 15-20 hours per week (more or less dependent on seasonal programming).
