WCPA seeks an artistic director to lead Windy City Gay Chorus and Windy City Treble Quire beginning August 2020. 


WCPA is a community chorus that comprises a diverse collection of singers from across the Chicagoland community. The choruses are committed to performance excellence and represent a significant social outlet for members to share their love of music and performing. WCPA is a community of people, of which the artistic director is a significant member. 


The successful candidate will identify themes and concert programming that resonates with the WCPA community and its audiences. Additionally, they will lead the rehearsals for both groups, which typically culminates in three seasonal concerts each year, as well as a limited number of additional performances by invitation. 


The choruses rehearse both separately and together during the course of each preparatory session (Fall, Winter and Spring). The Windy City Treble Quire rehearses on Monday nights from 7:30-10 p.m. and the Windy City Gay Chorus rehearses on Wednesday nights from 7:30 -10 p.m. 


This position is a part-time, contractual position. 


Position Duties

  • Direct and prepare three concerts per annual season (early December, March, June), as well as ad hoc preparation for limited additional engagements / performances as necessary

  • Lead the musical selection, as well as the artistic and technical development of the organization in preparation for performances

  • Conduct one weekly rehearsal for each ensemble and one combined all-day rehearsal per preparatory period with optional additional rehearsals as needed

  • Coach and educate the choruses on vocal sound, including proper vocal technique

  • Conduct auditions for prospective members

  • Work collaboratively with the day-to-day operations of the chorus, board of directors, and general manager as it relates to budgeting, membership, development and community engagement

  • Attend board of directors’ monthly meetings and contribute a monthly board report as head of the artistic committee

  • Promote WCPA’s mission while representing the organization in public.

  • Assist WCPA leadership in facilitating a welcoming, respectful and safe environment for all members and audience participants during rehearsals and performances.


Qualifications and Requirements

Ability to select programming, conduct successful rehearsals, and prepare the choruses for concerts is the prime responsibility of the artistic director. 


Additionally, the successful candidate should have:

  • Minimum of five years of progressive choral experience with appropriate musical education — formal training and/or equivalent experience considered

  • Ability to lead rehearsals on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:30-10 p.m. 

  • Outstanding musicianship

  • Broad knowledge of choral repertoire

  • Understanding of a diverse range of gender identities and voices

  • Experience and willingness to work with LGBTQ+ community in a safe environment for all

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to positively motivate and lead individuals and large groups is essential

  • A good sense of humor is a plus


Compensation and Benefits: 

The artistic director position is that of an independent contractor. Payment is negotiable based on experience. The compensation range is $20k-$35k for part time.
