We are currently seeking applications for an Artistic Director to guide the next phase of Orpheus Chamber Singers’ growth as the leading professional choral ensemble in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

The Orpheus Chamber Singers, Inc. assembles the finest professional adult mixed choir from singers across North Texas to enrich others through live performances and recordings of the choral canon from the Renaissance through today and to serve our community through charitable outreach and educational activities.

Job Overview

The position of Artistic Director is a part-time position in Dallas, Texas. The engagement will begin on July 1, 2021. Weekly hours may vary based on the performance schedule (averaging 5-15 hours); weekend and evening work is required. The Artistic Director reports to the President of the Board and works closely with the Board of Directors and Executive Director.

Responsibilities and Duties

This role is responsible for the following:

  • Establishing, developing, and communicating the artistic vision for the organization

  • Programming a minimum of four concerts per season, selecting repertoire using traditional and non-traditional chamber choral music sensitive to the mission of the organization

  • Working with the Board of Directors and Executive Director, develop and manage an annual budget

  • Creating and conducting rehearsals and rehearsal schedules as appropriate for each concert cycle

  • Establishing a roster of professional singers and hearing regular screenings/auditions as necessary to maintain it

  • Working with Execute Director to source and hire collaborative artists, soloists, and small ensembles for the needs of each concert cycle

  • Selecting performance venues in consultation with the Executive Director

  • Working with the Board of Directors and the Executive Director, design and execute on a 3-5 year Artistic Plan that enables long term fundraising strategies

  • Envisioning, initiating, and executing recording projects

  • Acting as spokesperson for the organization in interviews, press, and other promotions as necessary

  • Supporting the Executive Director in other areas, not limited to: the music library, concert publicity, score procurement, venue and stage configuration, outreach activities, writing for newsletters and grant submissions, meeting with potential Orpheus supporters, participation in educational outreach, and attending and participating in social and civic events

  • Attending and contributing in regular board meetings


The successful candidate for the position of Artistic Director will have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrates success as an accomplished conductor of collegiate and/or professional-level ensembles

  • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of chorale repertoire

  • Demonstrates thoughtful, creative, and innovative programming

  • Demonstrates superb rehearsal technique, a thorough knowledge of the choral score, and an understanding of vocal pedagogy

  • Demonstrates an ability to work successfully with a Board of Directors, donors, and patrons

  • The final candidate will be expected to undergo a criminal background check

Compensation and Benefits: 

Pay range is projected to be $22,000–$27,000, commensurate with experience.

  3. A 15–20-minute video sample of a rehearsal with an existing ensemble

The selection committee will notify semi-finalists by April 17, 2020. Semi-finalists will be asked to submit three references, a sample season’s programming (four programs), and to appear for an interview with the selection committee.

Following semi-finalist interviews and review of submitted materials, no more than three finalists will be notified by September 15, 2020. Each finalist will lead Orpheus in a rehearsal in early January 2021. The board will announce its final decision by March 1, 2021.
