Overview: Founded in 1938, the Barbershop Harmony Society (“BHS”) is an arts education and performance organization with more than 20,000 singers in nearly 700 chapters throughout North America.  This position is responsible for leading our growing IT team and helping to generate solutions to address and meet various requirements and needs for the implementation of our new strategic vision, “Everyone in Harmony.” In this role, you will serve as a player/coach, making sure that projects are prioritized and solutions are designed and implemented to support business initiatives. This is a temporary position needed over the next 12 months to help us execute against our current and future needs.  

Reports To:  Sr. Director Of Impact, Barbershop Harmony Society



  • Work with the Senior Developer & Digital Analyst to:

    • Engage business function leadership to understand their needs and consult on possible solutions

    • Solicit and consult on requirements definition

    • Write and customize code in PHP

    • Comprehend business strategies and requirements and develop necessary designs and plans to ensure projects and solutions satisfy those needs

  • Manage IT demand and collaborate with executives and business leaders on prioritization

  • Mentor and coach an IT team of three

  • Act as a contributing member of the project team from project inception to completion

  • Develop and communicate Technology Vision, Strategy & Roadmap

  • Architectural evaluation, design and analysis of enterprise technology solutions

  • Actively listen to client problems and needs to implement that information when creating solution plans

  • Provide advice and make decisions about which technologies would be suitable to use for various projects

  • Consistently monitor the scope of projects

  • Collaborate with the Senior Developer & Digital Analyst, Project Coordinator, and other staff members to develop budgets and timelines for solutions

  • Assess and evaluate risk as required

  • Maintain understanding of how individual work and decisions fit into the broader organizational picture

Skills Needed

  1. Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, software engineering, or related field

  2. Ability to customize and code in PHP

  3. 6+ years of work experience in a relevant role

  4. Proven history of generating innovative and effective solutions

  5. Excellent interpersonal communication skills to explain complex technical topics in an easily digestible manner

  6. Infrastructure, network and application development experience

  7. Solution ideation, design & implementation

  8. Vendor management

  9. Team Management/Leadership in Information Technology

  10. Experience with database management and proper systems security best practices

  11. Previous project management experience is preferred
