Executive Director

Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir

Our mission is to advance the choral arts through education, performance, and collaboration at the highest artistic level, fostering individual development and international relationships.

Founded in 1982, the internationally acclaimed Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir (PEBCC) guides young singers to develop their fullest potential as choral artists.  PEBCC provides a music education that enables children to become highly skilled and sensitive musicians, and seeks to broaden their musical horizons on an international scale.

We aspire to be the leader for vocal arts education in the East Bay. We develop performers who compete at a world-class level, and train young minds in teamwork, discipline and collaboration.  We achieve this not only by engaging the best choral educators and vocal artists, but also by challenging our performers with innovative new music and collaborative performances with other outstanding performing arts organizations in the East Bay.

Our program:

  • Draws 300 students, ages 4–18, from throughout the East Bay;

  • Provides a comprehensive music curriculum as children progress through a series of training choirs to professional-level performing groups;

  • Has won first prizes and gold medals at prestigious competitions in Europe, Asia, and North America through its annual international tours, in over 25 nations to date;

  • Maintains a vigorous program of innovative music projects, commissions and premieres;

  • Collaborates with outstanding performing arts organizations, including the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Berkeley Symphony, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Volti, Cal Performances, the San Francisco Choral Society, West Edge Opera, and the Mark Morris Dance Group;

  • Hosts the Golden Gate Festival, an international weeklong choral festival and competition, triennially:

    • The 11th Golden Gate Festival took place July 2018, and remains the only regularly held international youth choral competition in the United States;

    • More than 4,200 young musicians, from 72 choirs and 23 countries have participated since its founding in 1991;

    • More than 60,000 audience members have supported the festival.

The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors.  The ED is responsible for the Administrative staff and together with the staff, oversees and produces choral programs throughout the year while managing an annual budget of $1.4 million.  The ED works closely with the Artistic Director in support of all the programs.

PEBCC seeks a high-energy, charismatic, and dynamic leader to serve as the next Executive Director.  The ideal candidate should have:

  • A BA, MA or MBA or certificate in arts administration, or equivalent experience;

  • At least five years’ experience in a senior management position;

  • Exemplary skills in fund development, strategic planning, budget planning, and financial analysis;

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;

  • A strong commitment to the mission of the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir.

  • Lead a strong campaign for developing, implementing and expanding fundraising initiatives including support of the annual gala;

  • Shift financial model from a heavy dependence on earned revenues (tuition), to a greater reliance on contributed income and grants;

  • Recruit and retain a diverse student body;

  • Promote PEBCC programs and performances;

  • Establish collaborative working relationships with compatible local arts organizations;

  • Coordinate with and support the Artistic Director;

  • Recruit and manage administrative personnel, developing goals for staff, conducting annual performance reviews, creating succession plans;

  • Maintain a positive climate that attracts, motivates and retains diverse and talented staff;

  • Work closely with the Board President and the Board Committee Chairs;

  • Together with the Artistic Director, suggest short and long-term program strategies that achieve the organization’s mission with consistent and timely progress toward the current strategic goals;

  • Oversee production of the Golden Gate Festival triennially;

  • Oversee production of approximately 9 concerts, 2 tours, and a 12-day music camp annually;

  • Supervise a staff of 5 to 7;

  • Organize and manage volunteers in support of programs and the Golden Gate Festival;

  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations;

  • Work with the staff, Board Treasurer and Finance Committee to prepare the annual budget, other financial plans, and establish financial control protocols;
