Abbie Betinis

Composer Abbie Betinis writes music called "inventive, richly melodic" (The New York Times), “superb… whirling, soaring” (Tacoma News Tribune), and – of her partner piece to Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms – “the highlight” of the program (Boston Globe).

With over 50 commissioned works for ensembles such as Cantus, The Dale Warland Singers, New England Philharmonic, and The Rose Ensemble, Betinis has been awarded a McKnight Composer Fellowship, grants from the American Composers Forum, ASCAP, and Jerome Foundation, and was recently listed in NPR Music's Top 100 Composers Under 40.

Her music is represented on 25 commercially-available recordings and published by Augsburg Fortress, G. Schirmer, Graphite Publishing, and Kjos. A strong proponent of small business and cooperative models, she is a founding member of the Independent Music Publishers Cooperative and runs her own company, Abbie Betinis Music Co. LLC, which now publishes and distributes her sheet music internationally.

Betinis graduated from St. Olaf College, the University of Minnesota, and studied harmony and counterpoint at the European American Musical Alliance in Paris, France. A former alto in The Dale Warland Singers, she now sings with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra Chorale and The Singers-Minnesota Choral Artists, and enjoys playing euphonium (badly) in a community band. She lives in Saint Paul, where she is composer-in-residence with The Schubert Club and adjunct professor of composition at Concordia University.
