Missa Kenya
by Paul Basler

The Negri Mass will be accompanied by Joe and his quartet and will feature Maureen Budway, mezzo-soprano and Thomas Douglas, baritone as soloists with the Choir.

Jazz Mazz, the final concert in this MASSive Bach Choir season will include the terrific Mass of Hope by Pittsburgh’s own Joe Negri, along with an intriguing treatment of the mass entitled Missa Kenya by Paul Balser.

The Negri Mass will be accompanied by Joe and his quartet and will feature Maureen Budway, mezzo-soprano and Thomas Douglas, baritone as soloists with the Choir.

The Balser Mass is fused with African rhythms and harmonies and will serve as a perfect complement to the Negri contemporary Jazz idiom.

Speaking about these concerts to be presented that complete the Bach Choir’s 79th season, Artistic Director Thomas W. Douglas says:

"I’m delighted we get the chance to collaborate with Joe again. A few years ago we commissioned him to write pieces for us based on poetry from the Harlem Renaissance which were very well-received.  His Mass of Hope is a wonderful piece and we are pleased to be able to bring it to the community.”
When asked about his involvement, Joe Negri responded:

“Thomas has been the main baritone soloist in this work for several years. It’s great to work with him and the terrific Bach Choir again. I can’t wait to hear how my Mass sounds with these 80 great voices.”
