Diane Benson is retiring after 30 years as Music Director with Houston Choral Showcase, a community show choir. Her final performance with the group will be on Saturday, June 11 at 4pm.
Diane Benson joined Houston Choral Showcase in 1986 as a singer, but within months found herself as the Music Director. Under Ms. Benson’s leadership, the choir has transitioned from a large community chorus singing traditional material to a smaller auditioned show choir performing memorized repertoire of pop, jazz, swing, gospel, and Broadway, with the addition of movement, costumes, and staging.
Diane Benson’s final show as Music Director of Houston Choral Showcase will be Saturday, June 11, 4pm at the University of Houston Student Center Theater. This “Show People” performance will include songs from musicals and movies (Beautiful, Porgy & Bess, The Godfather), classic favorites (California Dreamin’, Peace Train, Free Ride), contemporary hits (Hey Brother, Thinking Out Loud, I Bet My Life), and more. Tickets are $20 at the door with discount pricing for advance purchase online. Parking is free in the UH campus surface lots, and the web site houstonchoralshowcase.org has maps and more information.
After the spring show, Houston Choral Showcase singers will take a break and then resume rehearsals in August with new music director Jen Young. Potential new recruits are invited to attend a Singalong & Social on July 25 and auditions on August 15.
