This spring Crescendo's Baroque Oratorio Concert will feature two settings of the Dixit Dominus (Psalm 110) by Handel and Vivaldi.

For its spring concert program, the Crescendo Chorus, soloists and its Period Instrument Orchestra will present a Baroque Oratorio Concert featuring Dixit Dominus (Psalm 110), a profound message of the triumph of good over evil. The settings are those of George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi, two of the Baroque era’s most famous and beloved composers.
Handel was only 20 years old in 1707 when he composed the Dixit Dominus HWV 232. Scored for a five-voice chorus, soloists and chamber orchestra, the work shows, even in his early years, his talent for using music to communicate the drama of a composition’s text.
Vivaldi’s Dixit Dominus RV 807 for four-voice chorus, soloists and chamber orchestra was re-discovered in 2005 having been for two centuries wrongly attributed to the successful operatic composer Baldassare Galuppi.  Vivaldi’s oratorio is a composition of outstanding musical quality that dates from his late period. It includes a majestic trumpet part alongside the string and woodwind orchestra.
The program also includes two vocal works of Galuppi, who often featured the trumpet with voices. They are the motet Jesu Corona Virgo for chorus and chamber orchestra and Alla tromba della fama for countertenor solo, trumpet and chamber orchestra.
Performers for these concerts are the Crescendo Chorus and the Period Instrument Orchestra with strings and woodwinds as well as natural trumpet player Chris Belluscio from Boston. The vocal soloists are sopranos Michele Kennedy, Jordan Rose Lee and Jennifer Tyo, tenor David Vanderwal, bass baritone Enrico Lagasca, and the internationally-acclaimed countertenor Nicholas Tamagna. Christine Gevert, Crescendo’s Founding Artistic Director, will conduct.
