The Mystical 116--Psalm 116 in Renaissance, Baroque and Contemporary Settings
In the year 1616 Burckhard Grossmann, a merchant from Jena, Germany, after surviving a near death experience, expressed his gratitude by commissioning 16 German composers to write settings of Psalm 116, a thanksgiving for deliverance from death. Among the master composers were Henrich Schutz, Christoph Demantius and Johann Hermann Schein.
The concert features works by these men from the collection as well as Gregorian Chant and works by Benedictus Ducis, Orlando di Lasso and J.S. Bach. There will also be modern settings of the psalm by composers Jonny Priano, Cheng-Chia Wu, and Juan Mesa, all commissioned by Crescendo for this performance.
Performers are the Crescendo Chorus, Vocal Ensemble and soloists with Period Instruments with Artistic Director Christine Gevert conducting.
