When Malia Ka'ai Barrett took over as general manager of the Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus, it was for the love of the music—pure and simple. Despite a lifelong involvement with choruses, Barrett had little training or experience in the technical aspects of running a mid-sized nonprofit organization. She traveled to Chorus America's Conference with a goal of gathering tools to manage a database that included everything from donor information to singers' costume sizes to a 4,000-work music library.
