All U.S. Nonprofits Must Now File 990-N at Minimum |
Has your organization filed its 990 form? A new law enacted this year requires that all U.S. nonprofits, even those with budgets under $25,000, must at least file a 990-N. May 17 was the published filing deadline for those organizations whose fiscal years ended December 31 and who have not filed any kind of tax return for the past three years. However, because this law is new, the IRS has extended the deadline, and any organization needing to file may still do so. Organizations that do not file risk revocation of their charitable status by the IRS.
Chorus America has been educating members about the evolving tax regulation through articles in The Voice (see “Reports You Can Count On,” Vol. 32.2, in the Members-Only section of our website) and The Chorus Leadership Guide. Organizations with budgets under $25,000 now need to file the basic 990-N (or “e-postcard”). For organizations with fiscal years ending on dates other than December 31, the standard IRS deadline applies, which is the 15th day of the fifth month following the end of your fiscal year. If you have questions about this, please feel free to email Catherine Davies, director of membership services, at catherine@chorusamerica.org.

Our Conference attracts hundreds of choral music enthusiasts, offering valuable exposure to those choruses who submit CDs to the store. Simply send us 1-5 copies of new releases from the past two years and ship them with a tracking code by June 1 to the Chorus America office: 1156 15th Street, NW, Suite 310, Washington, DC 20005. We appreciate all contributions—all proceeds from the store benefit Chorus America and ultimately our members! |

Tip #1: "Ask yourself: What makes my company unique? Because with countless rivals out there competing for the same space, what's to make an editor choose you out of a sea of faceless competitors?....Start by picking three attributes, or unique sales points, that present your case and weaving them into a compelling narrative, which makes it fast and simple to see where a potential fit lies." Read nine more tips for getting your story or event picked up by news organizations in this recent article from The Washington Post and Entrepreneur.com. |
