4:00-5:00pm

In the collection of essays, Engaging Art: The Next Great Transformation of America’s Cultural Life, sociologist and cultural policy expert Steven J. Tepper sheds light on the state of cultural engagement and how participation is changing. For most people today—and especially for younger people—art is connected to everyday life; it is not a treasure to be taken out on special occasions, admired and celebrated. “Culture,” says Tepper, “is like modeling clay—something to be kneaded and worked on, rolled across the fingers until it takes the shape and contour of one’s own hand.” In this opening plenary conversation, you’ll hear about the trends in this “experience economy” that should influence your work with your chorus.

Speaker: Steven J. Tepper, Associate Director, Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt
Interviewer: Tom Hall, Music Director, Baltimore Choral Arts Society
