Pacific Boychoir Performs Rachmaninoff’s Vespers at Cathedral of Christ the Light

Oakland, CA

Pacific Boychoi... | Children/Youth

Every three years, the Grammy-winning Pacific Boychoir presents Rachmaninoff's epic All-Night Vigil, or "Vespers". First premiered by a boys choir in Moscow in 1915, the Pacific Boychoir became the first choir to reproduce the original performing forces in 2007, when the San Francisco Classical Voice said “The sheer sonic experience was chilling.” Along with Wesley Rogers as tenor soloist, the Bay Area’s finest choral tenors and basses augment the choir, which will number 90+ male voices to present Rachmaninoff ’s masterpiece. Also on the program is Arvo Pärt's The Beatitudes, with guest organists Ben Bachmann (May 24), and Rudy de Vos (May 25). Read more

Monmouth Civic Chorus - Durufle Requiem

255 Harding Road (Tower Hill), Red Bank, NJ

Susan Metz | Audiences, Performance

The Monmouth Civic Chorus 2012-2013 season closes with Maurice Duruflé’s exquisite Requiem, paired with Triptych, composed by Tarik O’Regan in 2005. Duruflé interpreted the traditional Latin mass for the dead as a vision of peace and harmony. Dr. Brandau notes that Triptych“marries rhythmic, syncopated, jubilant passages with moments of stunning, ethereal tranquility. The music is at once accessible, haunting, and infectious.” Karin Gargone of Neptune, a faculty member at Ocean County Community College and Music Associate at Toms River Presbyterian Church, will be the organist. Two CDs Released by Boston’s Coro Allegro

kipjld1964 |

Coro Allegro, a classical SATB ensemble composed of members and friends of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, extends its commitment to contemporary choral works with the release of two CDs under the Navona label. Awakenings features two extraordinary works by Massachusetts composers: “Shofar” by Robert Stern, an intensely dramatic recounting of the Biblical story of Moses and the Israelites premiered by Coro, with libretto by Catherine Madsen; and “Why I Wake Early” by Ronald Perera, a suite of eight evocative songs with text drawn from poems by Mary Oliver. Says The New York Times: "Ms. Oliver's poetry...reveals an awestruck regard of nature that verges on the religious...Enhanced by Mr. Perera's estimable knack for setting English, this is a substantial addition to the choral canon.” In Paradisum features live performances of two Coro-commissioned works by acclaimed composer Patricia Van Ness: “Requiem,” a personal, intimate ritual of consolation reinforcing the presence of divine love; and “The Voice of the Tenth Muse,” an expansively spiritual work based on the texts of Sappho. Featured soloists include Sanford Sylvan and Ruth Cunningham. Both CDs are available for purchase at www.coroallegro.org/cds Read more
