The OCWC is bringing the musical gems of the Near and Far East to Orange County! Join us for a unique program of music from – and about – Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, and more.
The Orange County Women’s Chorus continues its 14th season with Eastern Portraits, a concert of works from South and East Asia. This one-night-only concert takes place on Saturday, March 31st, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Wilfrid of York Episcopal Church in Huntington Beach.
The diverse program represents the OCWC’s first musical journey to the Near and Far East. The repertoire includes contemporary works from composers such as Chen Yi, as well as traditional folk songs from Japan, China, Korea, and Thailand, and British composer Gustav Holst’s sweet settings of poetry by the 4th-century Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. The performance also includes the world premiere of the OCWC’s annual commissioned composition: Ethan Sperry's rocking arrangement of the Bollywood hit “Barso Re.”
Joining the OCWC for the performance will be members of Jodaiko, UC-Irvine’s taiko drumming ensemble. Jodaiko, according to their website, “brings the Japanese art of Taiko to UCI and the rest of Southern California. The word ‘Jodaiko’ means ‘passionate drumming’ in Japanese, and Jodaiko could not have been described better!” The program also features percussionists Angie Tabor and Erik Leckrone playing instruments from around the world.
Founded in 1997, the Orange County Women’s Chorus is in its 14th year together as a performing ensemble. Under the direction of Eliza Rubenstein since 2000, the OCWC has quickly become one of the most respected choruses in southern California. The chorus is honored to be one of only 14ensembles from five states invited to sing at the American Choral Directors’ Association’s 2012 Western Division Conference on March 2, 2012.
Admission to the concert is $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. Discounts for groups of ten (10) or more are available. For more information, call the Orange County Women’s Chorus at (949) 451-8590 or visit www.ocwomenschorus.org.
