This one-time award, which recognizes the late Margaret Hillis for her more than 40 years of professional achievement and outstanding contributions to the choral art, is presented annually to an ensemble that demonstrates artistic excellence, a strong organizational structure, and a commitment to outreach, educational, and/or culturally diverse activities. A cash award of $5,000 accompanies a plaque honoring the chosen ensemble. The award is given in alternating years to a professional or professional-core chorus, a volunteer chorus, and a children/youth chorus. The winner is announced at the Annual Conference in June.

Your application narrative should include the following and not exceed five (5) pages in length:
- Mission Statement
- Excellence: State why you believe the chorus nominee has distinguished itself in the area of performing excellence over at least the last three complete seasons. (Cite grants received, critical reviews, size of audiences, invitations to perform/record, recordings, etc.)
- Repertoire: Briefly comment on the chorus' programming philosophy and programming highlights from the past three complete seasons.
- Financial History: Briefly comment on the chorus' fiscal management and current financial position, including plans for maintaining stability in the future. If deficits occurred in any given season, explain the efforts made for debt reduction.
- Education Outreach Programs: List and briefly describe all programs involved with education, outreach or reaching new audiences in your community.
Your application must also include:
- A list of repertoire performed during the last three complete seasons and current year. Indicate all works by American/Canadian composers. Give dates of all performances.
- Financial statements for the last three complete seasons and a year-to-date budget vs. actual finance report for the current year.
- A representative CD recording and separate play list following these guidelines:
- The total recording time must be limited to a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 25 minutes.
- All selections on the recording must be from the last three complete seasons or the season in progress.
- Clearly label the CD itself with the chorus name.
- At least one selection should be a complete piece.
- At least one selection must be an unedited live performance or rehearsal.
- Include at least some a cappella singing in the selections.
- Applicants are encouraged to exclude long orchestra introductions.
- Applicants are encouraged to include a variety of compositional styles and choral techniques.
- Provide a play list separate from the CD itself, listing composer, title, date performed/recorded, and timing of each selection. Note which are live recordings and which are edited recordings.
Complete applications include five (5) copies of all application materials, including five (5) copies of the CD recording. Applications must be postmarked by February 28, 2011 and sent with a tracking number of some kind (USPS Delivery Confirmation will suffice) to:
