2011 Dale Warland Singers Commission Award

Application Procedures

The Dale Warland Singers Commission Award is presented by Chorus America in partnership with the American Composers Forum. The award was created to recognize a chorus entering into an artistically meaningful and mutually beneficial partnership with a composer of their choice to contribute a new work to the choral repertoire.

NEW! Eligibility now rotates through a three-year cycle: adult volunteer choruses (2011), children/youth choruses (2012), and professional and professional-core choruses (2013).

To apply, prepare a statement (no more than five pages) that discusses the following criteria:

  • Skill and artistic quality of the chorus as demonstrated by a representative recording
  • Ability to carry out the proposed commission (administrative capacity and artistic potential)
  • Artistic accomplishment of the composer as demonstrated by work samples (a maximum of two scores)
  • Artistic merit of the proposed project for the chorus within the context of the overall programming plan
  • Significance of the commission to the composer's career development
  • Plans by the chorus for additional performances beyond the premiere

The winning chorus will receive a cash award of $5,000, designated towards the commissioning fee (no portion of it should be used for concert production costs). It is the responsibility of the chorus to reimburse the composer within ten days of receiving the award. The new work must be premiered by the chorus within two years after receiving the award.

Deadline for proposals is February 28, 2011.

There is no application form for this award. A completed application consists of:

  • A written proposal addressing the criteria above, no more than five (5) pages long
  • A representative CD recording of the chorus clearly labeled with the chorus name
  • A CD track listing that includes title, composer, and timing of each piece
  • A project budget for the concert at which the commission will be premiered, including all commissioning costs and any other funding already secured
  • A maximum of two representative scores by the composer (standard paper sizes preferred)

Please note: You must submit five (5) copies of each of the required application elements above. This means you must send 5 copies of the chorus recording and 5 copies of the composer's scores, in addition to 5 copies of the proposal, budget, and CD track listing. Please do not staple or bind the application materials together. All application materials, except recordings and scores, must be on 8.5 X 11-inch paper and three-hole punched. Recordings and scores will not be returned.

Applications must be sent using a tracking number (USPS Delivery Confirmation will suffice). Send completed applications by February 28, 2011 (postmark) to:
