Job title: Director of Development Chorus/organization name: Rochester Oratorio Society Category: Administrative Duties and responsibilities: Position Summary: The Rochester Oratorio Society (ROS) seeks a Director of Development to lead our development efforts. This enthusiastic and experienced professional will expand individual and corporate philanthropy as well as develop and strengthen fledgling outreach efforts. Specific Responsibilities: • The Director will develop and implement the strategies necessary to mount an annual fundraising plan that best meets ROS goals. S/he will look for creative ways to grow our funding sources and donors, and will be responsible for meeting specific annual growth targets in income, as well as increasing the number of donors and event attendees. • The Director is responsible for coordinating fundraising events, generating revenue and further enhancing awareness for ROS. The individual will solicit corporate sponsors and individual support for special events. S/he will manage guest relations at special events, oversee recruitment of special event volunteers and committee members, and coordinate staff support to special event committees as needed. • The Director will track and meet budgetary objectives and will maintain accurate and complete financial records for each event. In addition s/he will oversee the ROS development database. • The Director will develop and manage annual campaigns (e.g. annual appeal, board, community, community-business). • The Director will work specifically to develop and nurture prospects identified by the Music Director. • The Director will work closely with members of the board and chorus, to cultivate and identify new prospects. • The Director will engage and steward existing donors. S/he will research, identify and cultivate new community and corporate sponsorships; maintain regular contact with prospects through face-to-face visits, letters and personal calls; and manage and track activity. • The Director will work closely with colleagues to coordinate all marketing and communications (e.g. season brochure, concert mailings, cards, invitations, newsletters, Web pages, group e-mails). • The Director will organize donor recognition events. Requirements: Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. • 3-5 years of development experience (alumni relations, development, or comparable experience). • Proven success in the development field. • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, direct interpersonal skills. • Demonstrated ability to work with, motivate, and lead volunteers. • Ability to analyze, condense and synthesize information and ability to provide accurate analysis and summaries. • Experience directing advancement activities and working with donors and alumni leaders. • Experience with computer technologies and sophisticated software applications. • Ability to work as a member of a team to accomplish objectives. • Ability to work some evenings and weekends with occasional travel. • A working knowledge of and appreciation for choral music. Compensation: Approx. 30 hours/wk; $24,000-$30,000 Benefits: Chorus/organization description: An integral part of Rochester's vibrant arts community since 1945, the Rochester Oratorio Society is Rochester's premiere large concert chorus. This season and beyond, under current music director Eric Townell, the ROS will give voice to the very best qualities of Rochester and western New York by exploring a widely diverse, multi-cultural and modern repertoire in addition to the great standards, by collaborating with local arts groups of all kinds, and by taking its performances into the community in non-traditional settings. Its exciting 2007-08 series of concerts culminates in performances in Beijing, China, as the keynote ensemble of the Olympic Cultural Festival. Under music directors Theodore Hollenbach (1945-1986) and Roger Wilhelm (1986-2006), the ROS presented the Rochester premieres of major works, including Britten's War Requiem and Mahler's Symphony of a Thousand. It has performed tour concerts in six European capitals and at prominent festivals closer to home, including Chautauqua under conductor Uriel Segal. Its distinguished history with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra includes performances of Verdi's Requiem, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Handel's Messiah and the Rochester premieres of Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens and Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky, under maestros Seaman, Bernstein, Leinsdorf, Monteux, Zinman, Elder and Effron, among others.
